My 100th post: How blogging has changed my life

This is my 100th post on this blog! Looking back 100 posts I’ve come a long ways in my blogging.  I had wanted to start a blog for quite awhile, but didn’t think I had the time to keep it up.  Titus practically forced me into it (set up my account and everything).  2 years and 100 posts later I am so happy he did!

I’ll be the first to tell you that I’m not the most articulate one in the bunch. I don’t have perfect grammar, and spell check is my best friend. Sorry to the English police, but thanks for sticking with me and reading anyway! 😀

The top 5 ways blogging has changed my life:

1. It has helped me take pictures of my kids. I took pictures anyway, but not very many.  Now I take my camera almost everywhere I go and take pictures all the time.

2. It has helped me share pictures and stories of my little family with all the family that lives far away. My blog took on a new meaning when we moved a few states away from our family. It helps the grandparents and aunts/uncles keep up with we’ve been doing.

3. It has helped me document our lives. I love reading back on my blog. Often times I have forgotten some of the things we did.

4. It has helped me be positive.  No one wants to read something negative.  I started out that way, but really made an effort to change that.  I still have bad days, and maybe once in a while I’ll write about it (motherhood isn’t all about chocolate you know), but for the most part blogging has taught me to see the funny and or positive in almost every situation. And make sure you get a picture of it!

5. It has helped me do fun things with my kids. The years of James and Gideon as babies were very hard ones. But blogging has helped bring me out of the you-can’t-do-it-they-might-cry- and you-don’t-have-the-engery attitude. It has forced me to enjoy life with my kids and take pictures of them, even if it’s a mess or they are crying.

For example: (taken May 2014, I thought it would be cute to have all the boys on the fence. They thought not!)

The top 5 things I’ve learned about blogging:

1. You should always always have a picture on each post, even if that picture has nothing to do with the post.  It helps break up the long wordy posts, and gives people something to look at.  Face it, people would rather look at a picture then do a bunch of reading.

2. If you want people to read and comment on your posts, then post it on facebook every time you write one. Now that I do that many more people are reading and commenting.

3. Try to be funny. I’m not very good at this, but give it your best shot. People like to laugh!

4. Write about what you are passionate about. If you don’t like it, then skip it. I write about my family and the fun things we do.

5. Write about the little stuff. I’ve been surprised at the posts the people comment on the most. Sometimes I write something I think is great, but no one comments. Other times I’ll write something I think is ho-hum and people will comment like crazy. If it’s on your heart, write about it.

And now for some site stats

My most viewed post was: The birth story (probably because I had several people repost it on their facebook walls)

My most commented post was: Faith Natalie’s Birth Story

My most memorable post was: Submitting to a big move ( I was so very touched at all the people that took time to comment on this post. This move was not easy for me and the support and love I felt from all of you that commented was amazing!)

I am not sure I really have a favorite but I do really like Biking with mommy because I wrote it from the children’s view point. (and YFI i had a different back ground back then and now it’s really hard to read. I highlighted all of it and that made it readable.)

Probably the worst blog post I wrote was No one wants to hold a crying baby. It’s full of self pity and down in the dumps. But it truly was the way I was feeling at the time.

My only regret is that I didn’t start sooner. I wish so much that I had blogged while living in Hawaii.  I do hope to some day blog backwards and fill in some gaps after Gideon was born, but it won’t be the same. Maybe years were lost. Some day I hope to print off my blog in a book, and have a hard copy. Since I hate to scrapbook this is the next best thing!

A New Name

So my blog name is map dot family, which was explained in one of my very first posts.  If I knew how to do those cute little links in a word I’d do that for you right now, but I don’t.  And since a little someone decided to get up at 6:30 this morning I’m too tired to try to figure it out. (By the way, I don’t do 6:30 a.m.! 7 is my limit!) Anyway, mapdotfamily was pretty cute, it explained our family and where we live very well.  Well since the move we are no longer a map dot family.  Pretty sure Denver Colorado isn’t a map dot, and if you have had any kind of geography you’ll know where it is.  So, I need a new blog name.  I was thinking about something generic, like

Pennerfamilynews

Pennerupdates

ThePennerfamily

But I’d like something a little bit more if you know what I mean.  If I knew the future I would do something like:

CountrygoneCity

RaisingBoys

Lifeinthefastlane (raising high energy boys)

Sleeplessparents

But who knows if we will stay living in the city or if we will keep having boys or sigh, if we will keep having such bad sleepers! 🙂  I also thought about doing something familyish with blessings or love in there, but that’s pretty over done.  Or something about being pregnant, since I feel like I’m always pregnant.  But that might not always be either. Fertility is taken for granted until you don’t have it anymore.

So what is my blog about? It’s really just about our family, recording our ups and downs with pictures for our kids to see when they are older.  It’s a cheaper and easier version of scrapbooking. 😉  If we don’t ever move back to MN then the blog will have a new meaning for all the family we left behind as a way to keep them updated with life news and pictures.

So I’m turning to all you lovely people, that get way more sleep then I do, to come up with something cute and fun. Preferably something that doesn’t have to be changed every few years and something short and easy that I can spell. 😉 Ready? GO!
